Then, the next surviving person clockwise from the deceased will be called, by name, to awake. This person is the witness and gets to ask about someone, much as the angel would. Note that the witness may be a member of the Mafia, but the moderator should go through the formalities anyway.

Variant. The deceased points to someone who becomes the witness.

The Archangel (to which we normally assign the ace of hearts) is a protecting character, who wakes up once during each night and indicates someone who is to be protected. During the night, the moderator shall announce "Archangel awake." The archangel shall open his eyes. The archangel may protect one person from mafia assassination during the night. The moderator shall ask, "Archangel, who do you want to protect?" The archangel shall point to someone, who may be the archangel himself. The moderator shall announce "Archangel asleep" and the archangel shall close his eyes. If that person is chosen to be killed by the Mafia during the same night, then the moderator merely announces at daybreak that noone was killed during the night.

This is a very powerful character, and we no longer play with one frequently. When we do play with an archangel, we generally limit his power to protecting people other then himself. This avoids the nasty problem of a game ending in a tie-- with one member of the Mafia who cannot kill the archangel and an archangel who cannot muster a majority during the day to kill the lone remaining Mafia member.

It is important to note that the Archangel does not protect against anything else than being killed by Mafia at night. The player can still be kille by Werewolves, the Vigilante or the Mayor.

The Sorcerer, similarly, protects one player (not self) against Werewolves.

Note - The Archangel was part of the original Mafia rules when it was introduced at Princeton. This variant was originally titled "No Archangel" and the archangel was included in the main rules. This is what we had to say about the character back when it was a regular:
    It seems that many folks play without an archangel. This means that that the angel will almost never reveal himself, because he will be an obvious target for the mafia once he does so. In this case, the angel must work anonymously, attempting to influence the game by mere argument.

    Note - We have played this variant on several occasions with great success. Generally, it is best to consider having two angels in this case instead of one. We have also discovered a very interesting strategy, namely that the angel should begin by checking on those players next to him. If they are cleared of being mafia, the angel should "smuggle out" information to this person by speaking quietly or otherwise indicating who is guilty and who isn't. In this way, information learned by the angel survives the angel and accusations can be made by the neighbor(s) of the angel, who, as ordinary civilians, are more expendable than the angel.
Note - We received on 12/27/99 a communication from Ephraim Ross of Pomona College who has informed us that he has played with a similar character called the Sheriff.

A certain Andrew Plotkin has suggested on his homepage about "Werewolf" (the game of Mafia under a different name) that one player could be protected against assassination from the beginning of the game. He suggests wolfsbane against werewolves; we would suggest a bulletproof vest against the mafia. One player could randomly be dealt, say, the jack of diamonds, and have a limited version of the power of the archangel-- in other words, only the power to protect himself against the mafia. This may replace or supplement the archangel. We have played several times with a bulletproof vest, with mixed reults. This could lead to tie situations.

Note - We have played frequently with the bulletproof vest, and he has become a regular, although not obligatory, character in our village. There has, in the past, been some confusion over the "tie situation" ending. If only one mafia member and one civilian are left, the mafia win, because the civilian cannot attain a majority to kill during the day and the mafia can kill off the remaining civilian during the night. Note, however, that if you have one mafia member and one bulletproof vest left, the mafia cannot kill during the night, and the bulletproof vest cannot convict during the day. The same thing would happen if you replace the bulletpoof vest in the above analogy with an archangel capable of protecting himself. Generally, archangels don't last as long, though, for a variety of reasons.

Note also that it doesn't behoove the bulletproof vest to come forward immediately-- the mafia will waste one turn on trying to kill the bulletproof vest. If the vest comes forward, the mafia will be able to use this formerly wasted turn to kill a civilian. However, once the mafia have tried to kill the bulletproof vest, it behooves the vest to come forward. If there is only one claimant to being the vest, then the civilians are assured of at least one person whose word can be trusted.

Note, however, that if you combine this variant with the variant of the devil, it is still debatable whether the vest should come forward after a night in which noone was killed-- perhaps the devil will still waste a turn checking the vest out.

Georg Essl has suggested that one may want to include a Devil (ace of spades) for those situations where two mafia are too few and yet three are too many. The devil works on the same side as the mafia, but he doesn't know who the mafia are, nor do they know who he is. The devil has a right to ask if someone is an angel. One may vary this to allow the devil also to know whether the chosen person is an archangel, or modified yet again to let him know who is mafia. One could use any combination of these powers. Remember, the devil is trying to help the mafia by rooting out the angel.

The Wizard is a similar role working for the Werewolves. The Wizard checks for the Seer instead of the Angel.

Note - On November 2, 1998, we tried out this role (the Devil) for the first time, and it met with some success. It is important to make clear at the beginning of the game that the angels cannot "see" the devil-- they are told by the moderator that he is innocent. (One may play a variant in which the moderator uses his fingers to indicate horns when the angel asks about the devil; we haven't tried this one.) Either way, the procedure adopted should be made clear at the outset of the round.

Further, the devil may easily indicate his identity to the mafia by signaling during the night with his eyes closed.

In the one round we played, the devil was able, quite neatly, to have an angel convicted. Since, however, people didn't realize the identity of the devil until the very end of the game, it wasn't obvious that the devil had influenced the game, and the character was deemed irrevelant by a number of players. This character suffers from the fact that his labors are perpetually hidden.

Note - On April 1, 1999, we tried the devil again but added in the variant that the Devil receives a nod for both angels and Masons.

Note - The Devil has achieved a certain resurgence in popularity as of April 1999.

Masons
                                       


We all know that our small Italian village is filled with Mafia and civilians, as well as the occasional werewolf or heavenly visitor. However, some of the civilians may be more than plain civilians. A select group of these citizens may be Masons.

Masons are just like plain civilians in every respect, except that they know each other from longstanding membership in the Masonic Lodge. They know each other well enough that they are sure their fellow Masons cannot be members of the Mafia.

Practically, Masons wake up the first night for the sole purpose of recognizing each other. After that, they are just plain civilians for the rest of the game.

This concept originated when Matt Hindman, on December 10, 1998, started asking people, "Are you a member of the Brotherhood?" (meaning the Mafia). Adrian Banner then asked, concerning one person, "What does it matter if he's a Mason? Find out if he's Mafia!"

The existence of Masons is a strong power for the civilians, because there is a nucleus of civilians in which no member will vote for the lynching of another member. Further, it would probably not be feasible for members of the Mafia to claim to be Masons.

The number of Masons should be small, and Masons should only be used in a game with a large number of players.

If one or more Masons are killed off early, their utility is very low, but Masons surviving to the end of the gameare extremely valuable to the civilians. It is only toward the very end of the game that Mafia members may claim to be Masons in order to convince civilians to kill off the real Masons. This is a desperate and risky strategy.

共济会员在其他各个方面都和普通平民一样,但是他们作为共济会的终身成员彼此相识。这足以让他们确定他们当中没有杀手。

共济会员的人数要比较少。而且一局游戏只有玩家非常多的时候,才适合加上共济会员这个角色。

如果一个或几个共济会员早早牺牲,他们的用处就不大了。但是如果共济会员能活到游戏结束的时候,对平民来说他们就价值连城。只有在游戏快结束的时候,杀手才可能发动对共济会员的指控,意在说服平民来处决共济会员。这是被逼无奈的冒险策略。

We noted a slight problem with this character. It is easy for the vigilante and the angel to give each other signals at night, so this was banned, except insofar as they may identify themselves to each other.

Also, it was resolved that, if the mafia kill the vigilante during the night, the vigilante doesn't get to kill.

Note
- As of October 2001, the Vigilante is a popular character, making regular apparitions. Especially in Multiple Life games, where players are called by name instead of character, which makes communications with the angel difficult.

This variant was suggested by Charles Stokes of Samford University. The mayor is a weakened vigilante. He may kill once during the game, night or day. In some variants, he may kill only during the day.

In Mr. Stokes' own words:

The mayor is a normal citizen in every way except that she can make one kill during the game. The mayor wakes up the first night to identify herself to the moderator and does not wake up again (except in Mayor wakes every night variant of this character, see below). At anytime during the day, the mayor may indicate to the moderator who she wishes to kill. Nothing happens to this person at this time, however, and play continues normally. At the end of that day after everyone "falls asleep" the moderator announces that the person killed by the mayor is dead by action of the mayor. The mayor may only exercise this power once and after doing so is a normal citizen with no special abilities.

Clarifications
    [*] Like other normal characters the mayor has no power when dead.
    [*] Anyone may claim to be the mayor and ask to execute someone, the moderator never indicates who actually effected the execution (since we also play with secret identities it is possible to not know who was the real mayor until the end of the game)
    [*] Once someone has announced she is the mayor and said who she wishes to execute, the pronouncement is irrevocable. In other words, even if she changes her mind, the person will die at the beginning of the night.
    [*] If the person who the mayor announces to execute is executed by vote in the town that same day and thus is already dead at the beginning of the night, the moderator announces nothing and continues play as normal, but notes (to himself, not allowed) the mayor has already used her power.
    [*] If the person who the mayor announces to execute is the final Mafia the moderator may end the game immediately or let discussion continue for fun and then end the game at the beginning of the night.
Immediate Execution by Mayor

In this variant the person is executed in the daytime immediately upon pronouncement of the mayor with the effect of silencing that person even in mid-sentence. This variant is fun and easy, but a little less strategic since the mayor's identity as a citizen is known to everyone after this and no one can ever fake being the mayor. It is the mayor is put on trial in this version. They almost always use their power to gain acquittal . . . and execute whoever is leading the charge against them.

Mayor Wakes Every Night

The moderator awakens the mayor every night and asks the mayor if she wants to use her power. Because we use secret identities the moderator continues to ask for the mayor every night if the mayor dies. After the mayor uses her power it is no longer necessary to continue to ask for the mayor to awaken.

"Morning After" Execution

This variant postpones the execution by a mayor until the "morning" (very first thing)of the next day after the mayor has called for the execution. This adds the possibility that the Mafia may choose to execute someone who was going to die already (thus wasting an opportunity to kill someone else). In addition, someone may claim to be the mayor and ask for the execution of someone in hopes that the Mafia will refrain from killing that person in the night.

市长直接行刑


这个演化规则中,市长可以在白天直接宣布处决某人。被处决的人即使话讲到一半,也要立刻闭嘴,从此不能再发言。这个演化规则又搞笑又简单。但是在策略上略有缺陷:这么一来所有人都知道了市长的平民身份,而且从此以后也不会再有人冒充市长。这个规则里市长要经受严峻的考验。他们几乎总是用他们的权力来证明自己无罪……并处决那些带头指控他们的人。

市长每夜都醒过来

法官每夜都唤醒市长,问他是否要使用他的权力。如果在游戏用的是不到结束不公开任何人的身份的规则,那么即使市长已经死了,法官也要夜夜都问市长是否要使用权力。但如果市长用过了权力之后,夜里就不用再唤醒他了。

在天亮以后行刑

这个演化规则把市长执行死刑的时间推迟到了他做出杀人决定的下一天早上。这就有可能让杀手在夜里杀到已经被市长判了死刑的人(因此杀手浪费了一夜机会,他本可以杀另一个人的)。此外,一些玩家可能自称是市长,并要求处决某人,希望以此防止杀手在夜里杀害这个人。

The Walrus, much like the Devil, works for the Mafia but isn't one of them. The Walrus wakes up each night and determines whether the Vigilante gets to kill that night. After the death of the Walrus, the Vigilante may kill any night he chooses.

The walrus debuted 10/14/99 and has been a startling success.

The Eggman has the same powers as the Walrus, but is on the side of the Werewolves. It is left to the moderator's discretion whether the Vigilante can kill if both Walrus and Eggman refuse. (That is, they could cancel each other.)

The Tooth Fairy is yet another variation of the same role, introduced by Benedict Brown on 11/14/02. The Tooth Fairy is on the side of civilians. It could be a useful character since the Vigilante sometimes is a little trigger-happy and ends up killing civilians.

In it introductory game, the Tooth Fairy was not a great success, mostly because civilians lynched the Vigilante on the first day, so the role became quickly useless!

This role made its debut on 3/4/99. It was well received. By acclamation, the king of the Mafia suit is the Godfather, the Queen is the Godmother, and the Jack is "Guido".

Note - The Magistrate was brought back into existence 6/24/99; however, the sequesteree could still cast a vote to convict. However, he could not debate or be lynched. Further, the Magistrate was given the option of sequestering someone. This was much more successful.

The Governor is an ordinary Civilian who may issue a "stay of execution" to save anyone who is being convicted during the day.

This may be implemented one of many ways:
    [*] In the original form, the Governor calls out to preevnt a lynching. Alternatively, the moderator may ask directly after a vote has been taken if the governor wishes to come forward and issue a stay. Note that after this has been done, the identity of the Governor is now public.
    [*] In a variant, persons who are executed do not flip thier cards over immediately; this is because executions occur at midnight. The governor is awakened during the night and asked whether he wishes to grant a stay of execution. This method keeps the identity of the governor secret.
    [*] Phil Lim of Vancouver suggests that the Moderator should see if the Governor is voting for the person on trial. If so, then that person dies if a majority is reached. Otherwise, he does not die, even if a majority IS reached.
Unless otherwise determined by the moderator, the following rules apply:
    [*] The one lynching per day rule includes persons who are saved by a stay.
    [*] The governor may issue only one stay on any individual. If the individual is placed on trial again, the governor is helpless to act.
    The governor may not issue a stay on his own execution.
Note-- This variant was recommended to us by Charles Stokes of Samford University. We introduced the role on 6/24/99 and it was a great success.

The Forensic specialist is a civilian character who gets to ask about one dead character per night. He receives both the method of death (killed by Mafia, or by Werewolf, etc.) and a unique killer ID.

For example, he gets to know that the first card he knows was killed by Mafia number 1. The next night, he learns that the new victim he checks was killed by Mafia number 2. Thus he knows there are at least two Mafia among them. And so on.

This character is virtually impossible to manage by a "live" moderator, but the computer moderator can do a decent job.

This is a suggestion by Adrian Banner. One civilian could be a vampire, who, upon being killed, is immediately (but only once) reborn as a member of the mafia.

There are several logistical problems associated with this variant, mainly dealing with the fact that the identity of the vampire would be obvious when he came back to life. However, if this were combined with a variant in which resurrection were already going on, it may pass unnoticed.

Mr. Banner has also suggested that the vampire be able to choose on which turn to return to life; this could further confuse issues.

Note also that this game must be played with the variant in which the identities of the dead are kept secret so that the vampire is not known after his first death.

Alternatively, the vampire could be a regular civilian who switches sides upon being killed by the mafia at night, but dies a normal death during the day. The vampire would be on the side of the civilians until killed by the mafia. Then, the moderator would politely announce that noone was killed during the night, or possibly even announce that noone was killed during the night, but there was a vampire sighting. From this point on, the vampire only wins if the mafia win. Note that, if unconverted, the vampire wins when the civilians win. Note also that the civilians will not know how many mafia there are unless the moderator announces the vampire sighting as noted above.

This role could be incorporated into the game of Mafia vs. Werewolves with an accompanying role for the Werewolf side, perhaps a demon? If combined with the role of Magistrate, then the moderator could simply announce after the Vampire is lynched, "Your lynching failed." The civilians would not know whether the lynchee was a Vampire or someone under the protection of the Magistrate.

The logistics of this character were developed by Morten Koster. The Prostitute is a less powerful version of the angel. The prostitute "visits" one person per night, and finds out if that person is Mafia (i.e. whether that person left his bed to kill during the night). However, the Mafia, after they select their victim each night, select a second victim-- to blackmail. If they choose the same person chosen by the prostitute, that person's vote does not count the next day, although this is not publically announced. Instead, if it is the crucial vote to convict, the moderator will only say, "The vote fails due to blackmail." The moderator may or may not announce at the beginning of the day whether someone was blackmailed; however, he should be consistent.

Note - This role came about the same way as the Masons. Matt Hindman asked one female alleged Mafia member, "Are you a woman of the night?" Immediately, several folks around the table yelled, "A new character!"

We tried this role on 1/21/99. Only one person was successfully blackmailed, and her vote didn't clinch the conviction that round. The prostitute functioned essentially as an angel.

His/her work is done during the day, when he/she tries to convince the "Townspeople" to "execute" him/her. The "Proxy" could thereby buy the Mafia another round at a critical point. We decided that, if investigated by the "Cop," (the Angel) the "Proxy" earns a nod from the Moderator just like the Mafia. We further determined that the "Cop" may chose to investigate this person again in a later night to determine if he/she was "Mafia" (earning a second nod) or "Proxy" (receiving a shake the second time). This character made for some interesting reverse psychology options. We concluded it would be more successful in a larger game.

    Something I was wondering: why not have a 'double agent'-like character? The ideas are not entirely fleshed out, but he would have to have the ability to work for both the mafia and the civilians, but always for his own aims. He wins only if he can get the game to what would otherwise be a stalemate.

    One possibility would be a character who gets to use the power of every other character in the game--once. So, during the night, after the mafia have chosen their victim, and before the next day proceeds, the double agent learns the identity of the victim. He can thus choose to save the accused (Governor), save the target of the mafia (Archangel) or himself (Bulletproof vest), commit a hit (Mafia, or as Mayor), sequester someone (Magistrate), etc. But once used, it's gone for good. And, also, he cannot use a power that someone else in the game does not have! If the angel is dead, he cannot use the angel's powers, etc. Or he can choose to do nothing.
We have not yet tried this variant.

* Super-saint character:

- I love this character, because it can work against both the Mafia and the Citizens, gives the Citizens another interesting character, and gives another character that people can claim to be during the day. (You can't kill me, I'm the super-saint!)

The theory of this character is that it is a Citizen who is SO good and saintly that people are horrified if they are falsely accused and lynched, and will therefore immediately lynch the Super-saint's accuser.

This is how it works: During the day, anyone can claim to be the Super- saint at any time (including the Super-saint themselves), but this might expose them to the Mafia, so they generally don't claim it except to save themselves from a lynching. If the Super-saint is accused, convicted and lynched, they reveal themselves when they turn over their card (to reveal the Super-saint card). Everyone is then horrified and the Accuser is immediately lynched. The Accuser could be another Citizen, or a Mafia. Of course, the Super-saint, like any Citizen, can be killed at night without reprocussion.

In practice this is an interesting character, because it make people more wary of being the 'Accuser'. They'd rather someone else accuse and join in seconding or convicting, in case they're accusing the Super-saint. It gives people another defence (true or not) that they shouldn't be lynched because they are the Super-saint. And it's another character that the Mafia have to be wary of (the Super-saint could end up getting them lynched) or exploit (hope that a Citizen accuses the Super-saint, getting rid of two citizens in one day).

The Judas and the Saulus are two inverse roles. Both have no other special abilities as Mafioso or Civilian than surviving, when they are first lynched by Mafia or civilians (or Terrorist). They don't know who the Mafia are and vice-versa.

The Judas wins with the civilians as long as he is not lynched. He sides with the Mafia as soon as he is lynched. The Saulus is the other way around

As one of these character dies, he does not flip his card, and the moderator annouces that the lynching failed. This is why one must have both characters playing at the same time, otherwise a failed lynching would automatically give this player out as being Mafia or civilian!

Strategies: Judas and Saulus are ideal Figures for getting the Angel lynched. The perfect game for a Judas is to come out as the Angel and accuse the real Angel of being Mafia, forcing the civilians to lynch the real angel and himself on the next day and winning finaly with the Mafia.

When a Governor is present those roles could become even more interesting as they could survive a lynching and only the Governor could (possibly) know if something strange happened.

Active Scharping

Can point every night at one person, who will become progessively slower. Thus, if the victim is a Mafioso, all the victims of the Mafia will survive one day longer. If he points at the Angel, all his information will be delayed by one night. This is a problem for the Angel, as it sees only that it did not receive information one night (as if victim of the Thief. However, the following night, it will get information about the person it pointed to the previous night!

The "active" version looks like a bookkeeping nightmare for the moderator!

This variant is only playable when dead players reveal their cards. The moderator selects the civilian cards in pairs (i.e. two 4s, two 5s, although I recommend doing colored pairs, such as the two black 5s, etc. to allow for more pairs). Players are grouped into "families" this way, although they do not know who their "relative" is. As normal, the Mafia kill a player at night, and the dead player's card is revealed at daybreak. During the next nightfall, the moderator wakes up the "relative" (the player knows who he/she is because he/she saw the revealed card). The "relative" can choose to take revenge and kill a player. This allows for people to eliminate a player they suspect of being Mafia, without having to sway a majority vote during daybreak. Of course, it's not always wise to blindly take revenge without a good suspicion.

This variant actually also can lead to a draw in a specific case which Mafia would normally win. Suppose at nightfall, there are three remaining players: 1 Mafia, and 2 Civilians who are related. At night, the Mafia kills one, and during daybreak, the lone Civilian can not get the Mafia lynched. During the next nightfall, the Mafia kills the Civilian, but the Civilian also takes revenge and kills the Mafia, ending the game with no living players. I imagine this would be a rare case, but it would need some definite ruling as to who wins, or if the game simply ends in a draw.


When we tested this variant on 2003-01-09 (see notes), we found that there could be an escalating number of Vigilantes when both Mafia and Vigilante kill different "civilians" at the same time... And also, we played a game where all civilians were paired, and thus each was uniquely identifiable, resulting in a situation where Mafia HAD to loose! Or did they?

The Accident Victim is actually that role, but because of an accident before the first day, he/she has amnesia and does not "remember" what he/she is until the 3rd nightfall. At the start of the 3rd nightfall, the moderator wakes the Accident Victim and shows him/her the remaining card, and starting that night, that player assumes that role (and can exercise any special powers that night).

This can greatly favor one side depending on what role the Accident Victim really is, since this can start the Mafia one member short, or the civilians without a doctor/archangel or detective/angel, etc.


We tried this variant twice, and both times the Accident Victim died in the first night from the hands of Mafia. It has thus not been a great success yet! We call that the Accident Victim's Curse ;-)

One of the many characters from the Werewolves of Thiercelieux:

The Cupid is a character on the side of the Civilians who gets to pick two players in the first night to be the Lovers. The Lovers know each other (the moderator wakes them up when the Cupid has made its choice), and if one of them dies, the other dies immediately from sadeness. In order to win, the Lovers must be the last two players alive.

The moderator should wake the Cupid first in the first night, and identify the two lovers by tapping on their shoulders. The Cupid can choose himself as one of the lovers. It is important that the Lovers know each other before Mafia kills, so that if one of the Lovers is Mafia, he can prevent his Lover's death.

We tried this variant on 2/13/03 (on Valentine's Day eve :-), but we used a deck of cards to randomly select the Lovers instead of a Cupid. Unfortunately, they died in the second night.

Basically, the Bus Driver plays for the civilians and he "switches peoples' seats." He wakes up at night and points at two people. These two people (let's call them Person A and Person B) are now 'switched' for just that night. Anything that happens to one of the two people chosen (be it targetted by 'Mafia', checked out by the 'Angel', or sequestered by the 'Magistrate') actually happens to the other person. So, for example, if Person A gets targetted by the Vigilante, then Person B is the person that actually gets killed by the Vigilante. Interesting results often occur, for example, Mafia members may end up killing themselvesbecause their target was switched with one of them.

翻完了。不是所有角色都适合引入版杀,也不是所有角色都那么精彩与合理。但是很多角色可以给我们以新的思路。

说起来,这些角色中我认为比较精彩的是:市长、州长、米勒、法医、吸血鬼、陪审团、恐怖分子、夏平、拥王者。

个人非常喜欢“陪审团”的角色,它可以在一局游戏里,最大限度的让那些可以用言论引导大家的人得到发挥

平民(包括隐藏着的杀手)通常会选择出看上去比较有分析能力的人进入陪审团,而进入陪审团有明显的好处(在处决人选投票上的优势),所以杀手如果想获得更大的赢面就应该努力进入陪审团,这使得杀手也应该努力的参加 白天的分析。同时对那些对游戏比较不关心的“潜水者”们来说,他们的潜水行为对整个阵营的不利影响也会降低
